Frommer's Staff

When Hwy. CA 5 was being built, they discovered this underground passage. Explorers have traversed more than a dozen kilometers, and they still have yet to reach an end. Guides -- they're free, but you should tip -- at the entrance will lead you around the first few hundred meters into the cavern, a true show cave with electric lights, rails, and steps. It is possible to explore further in the cave, though you must make arrangements in advance with the mayor of Taulabe.

At the entrance are a few craft and food stands; of particular interest are the numbingly rich sweets hanging in plastic bags -- they are famous in the region.
