Pulhapanazak Falls
Pulhapanzak is the awe-inspiring waterfall that adorns the tourist brochures and posters you see when you land at pretty much every airport in Honduras. The 43m-high (141-ft.) waterfall on the Río Amapa crashes down to a rocky base and radiates a heavy mist from the moist tropical air. Occasionally, you can catch a glimpse of a scarlet macaw or toucan in the trees around the falls.
There's a pretty park with a cafeteria and picnic tables above the falls, as well as a few swimming holes. Guides, usually local kids who hang around the park, can take you in a small cave behind the waterfall for a small tip. It's a slippery and often muddy path down to the base, so be extra careful.
It's easiest to reach Pulhapanzak on a guided tour, since getting here by bus is time-consuming and complicated. (By public transportation, you must catch a San Pedro-headed bus from Peña Blanca, and then after about 10km/6 1/4 miles, get off at San Buenaventura. From here, you must catch a taxi westward, or walk 45 min. or so up a bumpy dirt road to the entrance.)
