Things To Do in Lascaux (Montignac)
Lascaux (Montignac) Attractions
Public visits to the original Lascaux caves ceased in 1963. Permission to visit for research purposes is given only to qualified archaeologists, so unless you’ve got an advanced degree and good connections, you will have to make do with the replica. That said, Lascaux II is nothing to sniff at. Years of painstaking artistic and scientific labor went into re-creating the cave, including the use of prehistoric painting techniques and natural colorants. While some of the magic is lost, what you see is virtually identical to the real thing. For more virtual reality, you can visit the original cave online at extensive sites set up by the French government. More recently, the new Lascaux IV has opened (with Lascaux III being a touring exhibit). Somewhat confusingly, the Lascaux website refers to Lascaux IV as The International Centre For Cave Art, something to bear in mind when buying tickets online. You can also buy combined tickets for both Lascaux sites and Le Thot (check the websites for details).

Lascaux II
A short walk downhill from the real cave is the first reproduction, duplicated and molded in concrete to look and feel like the original stone. The 39m-long (128-ft.) tunnel faithfully reproduces the section of the cave harboring 90 percent of the famous paintings, so you will get a…Around Town - Archeological Site
Lascaux IV or the International Centre for Cave Art
Opened in January 2018 and still very much in demand, the home of the latest replica reveals far more of the cave than previous versions and uses a range of technology to take visitors back 20,000 years. New sections cover the cave’s discovery and its position in relation to cave art…Around Town - Zoo/Aquarium
Le Thot
This attraction includes a zoo with animals that approximate those depicted on the walls of Lascaux, like Przewalski horses and European bison. Projection rooms show short films on the discovery of cave art at Lascaux. After your visit, walk out on the terrace for a view of the…Around Town - Museum
Préhisto Parc
Around 15km (9 miles) from Lascaux but well worth the detour, this is a child-friendly overview of how Neanderthal and Cro-Magnon humans lived. The exhibits are set around a wooded walkway through a 5-hectare (12-acre) park, with recreations of scenes from daily existence—such as a…Around Town - Museum
Site Préhistorique de Regourdou
About 450m (1,476 ft.) uphill from Lascaux, a minor road branches off and runs through a forest until it reaches this site, discovered in 1954 by Roger Constant when he conducted an archaeological dig in front of his house. Among the treasures here is a skeleton of a Neanderthal man…Around Town
