Hotels in Lewes

Lodging options in Lewes include handsome inns as well as traditional motels. Prices range from moderate to expensive in summer -- and can be a bargain in the off-season. Some places require minimum stays. Reservations are mandatory in summer months and recommended at other times. Parking is at a premium; metered parking on the street may be necessary at some local inns.

For vacation rentals, call a real-estate agent. One reputable company is Jack Lingo, 1240 Kings Hwy. (tel. 800/331-4241 or 302/645-2207; www.jacklingo.com). Most rentals are houses or town houses in Lewes, some with views of or frontage on Delaware Bay.

Camping

Campgrounds at Cape Henlopen State Park are open March 1 to November 30. Reservations must be made at least 24 hours in advance. Call tel. 877/987-2757. Two sites are accessible for those with disabilities, and 12 are set aside for tent camping only. It's an inexpensive option in a resort area. The 159 sites sit on pine-covered dunes, with water hookup and access to clean bathhouses with showers. The sites are all fairly spacious, but the ones in the center loops are not terribly private. The largest and most private are located in the back loop, but they aren't well suited for trailers or motor homes. Rates are $25 to $31 per night. As with all camping on the Atlantic coast, mosquitoes can be a problem, so bring bug repellent.

Another option is Trap Pond State Park's 142 campsites, including eight rustic cabins overlooking the pond. Call tel. 877/987-2757 for reservations. Rates for out-of-state campers are $19 for tent sites, $28 for electric and water sites, $49 for one of the two yurts, and $59 for a cabin. The park also has boat rentals and pontoon boat tours in the summer.
