Things To Do in Lewes
Lewes Attractions
Pretty Lewes is more than a beach and shopping town. Its historic roots shine through -- in the eye-catching Zwaanendael Museum and in a complex of buildings that are part of the Lewes Historical Society. A little fun, a little history -- what could be better?
A Delaware Brewery & Winery
Nassau Valley Vineyards, 32165 Winery Way (just off Rte. 1, on Rte. 14B), Lewes (tel. 302/645-9463; www.nassauvalley.com), offers self-guided tours and tastings Monday through Saturday from 11am to 5pm, Sunday from noon to 5pm. You can see where the wine ferments; look at displays on viniculture, viticulture, coopering, and bottling; and taste the locally produced chardonnay, cabernet, and rosé. It won't take long, but it's a nice break from the beach.
If a brewery tour is more your style, try the Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, 3 miles west of Lewes, off Route 16 in Milton (tel. 302/684-1000; www.dogfish.com). Locals are big fans of Dogfish Head's quirky brews, which also sell in 27 states and four countries. You can see this locally made ale go from grain to bottle in fragrant and free tours offered Tuesday through Saturday afternoons year-round. Reservations are required.
