Bohemian sculptor Amadeo Modigliani was born here in 1884. In Paris, his womanizing was notorious, and he drank himself to death at age 35. Rumor held that a despondent Modigliani had thrown some of his works into a canal on his last visit to his hometown. In 1984, several sculptures were dredged up and trumpeted as his lost works.
