Hiking -- The trail map Gönguleiðir á Suðurfjörðum Austfjarða, the fourth in the Gönguleiðir á Austurlandi series, covers the coastal region from Berufjörður to Fáskrúðsfjörður, though trail descriptions are in Icelandic only. Two mountain climbs, Sandfell and Halaklettur, are especially recommended for their breathtaking coastal scenery; don't leave the peaks before signing the guestbook.

Sandfell is a distinctive 743m (2,438 ft.) rhyolite mountain between Stöðvarfjörður and Fáskrúðsfjörður. The best approach is from the south side of Fáskrúðsfjörður. The trail leaves the coastal road between Víkurgerði and Vík farms and proceeds along the Víkurgerðisá River before cutting west for the peak. (On the map, the trail begins as #13 and becomes #14.) The scenery is excellent en route, with views of Fáskrúðsfjörður and Andey and Skrúður islands. Allow 5 hours round-trip.

The 573m (1,880-ft.) peak at the tip of the peninsula between Fáskrúðsfjörður and Reyðarfjörður is Halaklettur. Trail #7 starts at the north shore of Fáskrúðsfjörður, just east of the Kolfreyjustaður church. The ascent is less interesting than on Sandfell, but the superior view from the top takes in Fáskrúðsfjörður, Reyðarfjörður, the Vattarnestangi lighthouse, and Andey and Skrúður. Allow 4 hours round-trip.
