The friendly, well-managed Berunes Youth Hostel (tel. 478-8988; fax 478-8902; www.hostel.is for booking; 15 units, none w/bathroom; May-Sept 4,700kr/$75/£38 double; breakfast available for 1,000kr/$16/£8; AE, DC, MC, V; closed Oct-Apr) is along the Ring Road 25km (16 miles) south of Breiðdalsvík, with comfortable rooms and great views of Berufjörður, and access to a guest kitchen and washer/dryer. Berunes itself is a very dignified-looking settlement: the house, farm buildings, church, and accommodations all blend harmoniously. The church is always open, and guests are welcome to play the organ.
