Watching the sun go down over St. Kilda beach from the veranda at Donovans (with glass in hand) is a perfect way to end the day. Gail and Kevin Donovan have transformed a 1920s bathing pavilion into a welcoming restaurant designed to make you feel as if you’re a guest in the Donovan home (or at least their beach house). Lots of cushions, a log fire, coffee-table books, and the sound of jazz and breakers on the beach complete the picture. If that’s not enough, the menu includes a mind-boggling array of dishes, many big enough for two, and even a children’s menu. Try the seafood linguine or perhaps slow-braised Wagyu beef cheek with creamy mash, baby vegetables, and a golden-crust mushroom pie.
