The first cup of tea served in this Melbourne institution left the pot in 1892. The Hopetoun Tea Rooms is very genteel, with green-and-white Regency wallpaper and marble tables, but the fine china has gone by the wayside in favor of rather chunky cups, and the sugar comes in paper packets. It does a full lunch menu, but really you should come for tea or coffee and cakes (which are very good). Scones, croissants, pasta, and grilled food are also available. The clientele is a mix of little old ladies and students, with the odd tourist or businessman thrown into the mix. Traditional “High Tea” at A$50 per person can be taken between 10am and 3pm.
