Getting There

By Train -- Hourly train service links Merano with Bolzano (40 min.).

By Bus -- SAD buses (tel. 0471-450-111 in Italy; www.sad.it) arrive and depart from the train station and stop in the center of town, connecting Merano with Bolzano hourly (1 hr.) and with villages throughout the region.

By Car -- Route S38, a pretty road that cuts through vineyards and mountain meadows, links Merano and Bolzano in less than half an hour.

Free Wheels

Late May through September, the town provides free bikes at the main parking lot (near the Terme, across the river from the center) and at the train station. Just leave a 5€ deposit and a driver's license, and return the bike by 7pm.

Visitor Information

The tourist office, Corso Libertà/Freiheistrasse 45 (tel. 0473-272-000; fax 0473-235-524; www.meran.eu), is open March through September, Monday to Friday 9am to 6:30pm, Saturday 9:30am to 6pm, and Sunday 10am to 12:30pm; October through February, Monday to Friday 9am to 12:30pm and 2:30 to 6:30pm, Saturday 9:30am to 12:30pm.

A good source of information on hiking the region is the local office of the Club Alpino Italiano, at Via K. Wolf 15 (tel. 0473-448-944; www.cai.it). It's open Monday to Friday from 9am to 1pm, plus Thursday from 7 to 8:30pm.
