A Victorian beaut, built in 1857 atop a hill, Te Puna Wai offers rooms filled with art and carefully-chosen antiques. Each has big windows through which you'll be treated to awe-inspiring harbor views. Our favorite of the three suites is the one that's tucked away up a tiny attic staircase. Its two bedrooms share a divine marble bathroom and you wake to wide sea views. The owners, Richard and James, are superb ambassadors for their home town, and will regale you with the history of the region, Maori legends and more (often over a free glass of wine or two in the evenings). The included breakfast is a gourmet feast. There’s a 2-night minimum stay.
