In some suites are electric fireplaces that not only look like glowing embers, they fill the room with a humidifying mist and either emit a crackling sound or stay quiet (the guest’s choice). On the design front, the hotel honors the area’s history (the lobby murals showing downtown NYC through the ages are stunning) as well as the owner’s Australian heritage, featuring very fine Aboriginal art from the owner’s collection and lots of mother-of-pearl ornaments (the family made its fortune in the pearl trade).
