King

King looks like a typical, cozy Greenwich Village bistro from the outside, but the cooking being done here is, yes, fit for royalty (and I say that knowing this place is named for the street it is on). The menu changes daily to take advantage of what’s most tantalizing at the green market, and though they do proteins with elan, it’s the vegetable elements on the menu that really set King apart. Recently that meant one of the most satisfying salads in the city: a blood orange and red endive, its bitterness perfectly balanced by paper thin sheets of ricotta salata. And siding perfectly duck breast with prunes was celeriac pureed to the texture of a cloud, and bracingly green braised chard. An excellent date place.
