Padua offers plenty of places to eat and drink (Aperol was created here in 1919), and you’ll especially appreciate the overall drop in prices compared with Venice. It’s hard to match the location of Bar Nazionale ★★, Piazza del Erbe 40 (Tues, Thurs, and Fri 7am–11:30am; Mon and Sat 7am–10:30pm; Sun 9am–9:30pm; Wed 7am–midnight), on the steps leading up to Palazzo della Ragione, though it’s best for drinks and snacks (excellent tramezzini from 2€, panini from 4€, spritz 3€, and glasses of wine just 2.50€) rather than a full meal. For that, make for Osteria dei Fabbri ★, Via dei Fabbri 13, just off Piazza del Erbe (tel. 049/650336; Mon–Fri noon–2:30pm and 7–10:30pm, Sat noon–3pm & 7–11pm, Sun noon–3pm), which cooks up cheap, tasty pasta dishes for under 15€.
