PGA National Resort
The name gives away the focus here. With five 18-hole championship courses and one nine-hole course on more than 2,300 acres, plus Leadbetter and Pelz golf schools, and tour-level club fitting, golfers and other sports-minded travelers will find plenty to keep them occupied. The Champion Course opened in 1981 and was originally designed by George and Tom Fazio. It was the site of the Ryder Cup in 1983, the PGA Championship in 1987, and the Senior PGA Championship for 19 years from 1982 to 2000. The course has undergone several renovations by Jack Nicklaus over the years with the latest completed in 2018. In addition to golf there’s tennis, pickleball swimming, a complete health and fitness center, six pools (but no beach) and a top-rated 40,000-square-foot European spa (which could be a destination in itself). Posh, tropical themed guest rooms are spacious and comfortable, bordering on residential in size, with immense bathrooms and private terrace or patio. Views are of the resort, pool, or lake. Club cottages are especially convenient, offering great privacy and serenity. The restaurants here are impressive too, especially the retro-fab, swank 1950s style steakhouse by “Top Chef” season 13 winner Jeremy Ford, The Butcher’s Club and modern American spot Honeybelle by “Top Chef’s” Lindsay Autry. An interactive kids’ club has a slew of activities for the young ‘uns.
