Husband-and-wife chefs Damian Sansonetti and Ilma Lopez have pulled off a rare combination: Chaval is both a buzzy destination dining spot that makes “Where to Eat Now” lists and a cozy neighborhood brasserie where the staff recognizes the locals and regulars hold down barstools. The French- and Spanish-inspired tapas and entrees include a knockout jamon serrano and a coq au vin that’s as layered and complex as it is comforting. The dining room is small, but there’s a beautiful garden patio at back. Absolutely save room for Lopez’s acclaimed desserts, which may include a “Spanish sundae” with caramel-topped serrano ice cream.
