Casa del Rey Moro

First the downside. This Neo-Mudéjar palace created by the Duchess of Parcent in the early 20th century (rather than by the Moorish king its name suggests) stands in a sorry state of repair and its interior is closed to visitors. So, the 10€ entrance fee seems steep to visit the gardens, beautiful as they are with a strutting peacock and views across the gorge. But if you’re fit for a serious climb and wearing suitable shoes, the 14th century Moorish water mine burrowed into the cliff known as La Mina, is extraordinary. It was used as water supply during sieges as Christian forces tried to retake the city. It descends hundreds of slippery stone steps to the water’s edge of El Tajo. Pause to marvel at the views of the turquoise river and its abundant bird life before contemplating your heart-thumping ascent back to the top.
