Children delight at feeding cracked corn to the white pigeons in Plaza de América, and you’ll definitely want a photo as the birds flock to their outstretched hands. They’ll also get a kick out of climbing the series of ramps to the belltower of La Giralda and taking a cruise on the Río Guadalquivír. Across the river at Isla de Cartuja, the site of Expo 92, interactive educational displays at the Pabellón de la Navegación, Camino de los Descubrimientos (tel. 95-404-31-11), capture the sense of adventure of the early navigators whose discoveries helped make Spain rich and powerful. Many of the accurate ship models on display were made for the Expo. A highlight of the visit is the 50m (164-ft.) Torre Mirador, which offers panoramic views of the city. The Pavilion of Navigation is open from November to April Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 7:30pm; Sunday 10am to 3pm. In May, June, September, and October it is open Tuesday to Saturday 11am to 8:30pm; Sunday 11am to 3pm. In July and August hours are Tuesday to Sunday 10am to 3pm.
Also on the site of Expo 92, the amusement park Isla Mágica,Rotonda Isla Mágica (tel. 90-216-17-16; www.islamagica.es), captures the fun side of the Expo with rides, entertainment and a waterpark that opened in 2014. Isla Mágica is open daily 11am to 11pm (until midnight on Sat) in July and August with more limited hours April to June and September to early November. Adult admission is 22€ for a full day and 16€ for a half-day. Children and senior citizens are 15€ for a whole day and 10€ for a half-day.
