Palacio de las Dueñas

Sevilla has an abundance of privately-owned palaces built in the 16th century when the city was the wealthiest in Europe. While some, like Casa de Pilatos, have been museums for decades, others have recently opened to the public. In some cases, the aristocratic families who own them continue to live in them, using tourism to help with the cost of maintenance. We consider this one, Casa Fabiola, and Casa de Salinas to be the most captivating of the newly opened homes.

Built in the late 15th century, this sprawling palace known as Palacio de las Dueñas has columns and Moorish arches, and was the favorite residence of Cayetana, Duchess of Alba—one of Spain’s most colorful aristocrats. When she died in 2014, her son, the 19th duke, decided to share it with the public. It’s a delight to wander through the gardens and patios where European royals once lounged and admire the family’s vast collection of art and upper-class knick-knacks.
