Sibiu's accommodations scene has exploded thanks to the city's newfound fame. Still, there's only so much room for growth in the historical center, so most of the cushier options are located just beyond the old city walls. Although many people insist on staying at the historical "Roman Emperor", it isn't exactly the classiest hotel in town. That distinction goes to the plush new Ramada, Str. Emil Cioran 2 (tel. 0269/23-5505; www.ramadasibiu.ro; doubles from 140€/$177), just outside the historical center. Its rooms are sumptuous and contemporary, with the best mattresses in town and just about every amenity you could hope for (including free Internet and large plasma TVs); all double rooms have tub/shower combos in the modern bathrooms. The chichi design throughout is relatively pleasing, and initial hiccups with service are steadily receiving attention. Book a room on the 12th floor, and insist on a view of the old city; don't forget to look out through the glass elevator as you're whisked up to your room.
