In a gingerbread-trimmed Creole cottage in the French Quarter in Orleans, you'll find home cooking, St. Martin style. Chez Yvette serves up big steaming platters of red snapper Creole, conch Yvette, oxtail stew, curried goat, and St. Martin chicken stew—all accompanied by rice and peas and fluffy, freshly made johnnycakes. Chef Yvette Hyman passed away several years ago, but her husband, Felix, and daughters run the business, cooking and serving dishes in the simple wood-framed interior, with tables often dressed in Creole madras tablecloths. For those looking for an authentic, homemade island meal, it's hard to do better than this. If you're driving, the restaurant is across from the Orleans pharmacy—but be sure to call ahead to make sure it's open.
