Rooms here are above one of Sydney’s most historic pubs, but despite that, they are not noisy. Carry your bags up the narrow stairs, and you’ll find a charming—if somewhat frayed around the edges—little haven overlooking the action on the street. Each room has a double, queen, or twin beds, and the nine rooms share five bathrooms. The guest lounge, overlooking the street, has a TV, books, and magazines and nice little touches like free tea and coffee available all day, bowls of fruit, and a decanter of port. A second, quieter lounge is down another hallway. The Australian is clean, comfortable, and a bargain.
