Cigarral de las Mercedes

In his famous 1624 book Cigaralles de Toledo, the Golden Age author Tirso de Molina describes the luxurious estates on the slopes overlooking the River Tagus where wealthy families would gather to enjoy summer recreation. Several Cigaralles still exist, and this one is truly spectacular. Set in 5 hectares (12 acres) of olive and cypress groves, its rooms, suites, and villas are arranged around landscaped pools and terraces with glorious views of Toledo’s famous skyline. They feature pale-painted interiors, elegant fabrics in champagne and silver tones, and a mix of antique furniture and contemporary art. For residents only, chef Javier Medina and his team serve high-end modern cuisine. While a stay here promises languorous pleasure worthy of the Golden Age, note that Toledo’s historic center is a 5km (3 mi.) taxi ride away.
