Mawamba is a collection of raised wooden buildings amid lush gardens on the ocean side of the main canal. This is the closest of the main nature lodges to the town, which is convenient for those looking to spend a bit more time soaking up the village’s local flavor. The rooms are simple and tidy, with walls and floors of dark varnished hardwoods. All come with some sort of shared or private veranda, and most of these are equipped with hammocks or rocking chairs. The four “superior” rooms are individual bungalows, featuring more space, king beds, large bathrooms with deep soaking tubs, and river views. The lodge has a large pool and several bar and restaurant venues, including a restaurant built on an old barge that floats down the river serving a multi-course meal (additional fee). Butterfly, frog, and iguana breeding projects ensure great wildlife viewing. Some tours offered, such as kayaking and night tours, also cost extra.
