Getting There
By Train -- Strategically located on a main north-south rail line between Italy and Austria, Trent is served by some 21 trains a day to and from Verona (55-69 min.), a major transfer point for trains to Milan, Florence, Rome, Venice, Trieste, and all points south. There are about two dozen trains a day from Bolzano (32-49 min.). To reach the center of town from the train station, follow the Via Pozzo through several name changes until it reaches the Piazza del Duomo as Via Cavour.
By Bus -- Trentino Trasporti (tel. 0461-821-000; www.ttesercizio.it), which leaves from a terminal next to the train station, is the major link to outlying mountain towns. There's also hourly service to and from Riva del Garda on Lago di Garda (1 hr., 40 min.).
By Car -- Autostrada A22 connects Trent with Verona in about an hour; from Verona, you can connect with the A4 for Milan (total trip time btw. Milan and Trent is about 2 1/2 hr.), and with the A22 to Modena and, from there, the A1 for Florence and Rome. (Trent is a drive of about 3 1/2 hr. from Florence and about 6 1/2 hr. from Rome.) A22 also runs north to Bolzano, a little over half an hour away; the slower S12 also connects Trent and Bolzano, and from it you can get on the scenic Strada di Vino.
Visitor Information
The local tourist office, near the Duomo at Via Manci 2 (tel. 0461-216-000; fax 0461-232-426; www.apt.trento.it), is open daily 9am to 7pm.
Trent on Two Wheels
The city offers bikes to those who sign up for the TrentoCard, which also offers discounts for municipal museums and transportation. A 1-day card costs 10€, and a 2-day card costs 15€. Pick one up at the tourist office, which also offers guided cycling tours on weekend mornings in warmer months. For example, on a recent September morning they were offering a mountain bike tour of the local trails: 12€ for the day. Tours are usually limited to 20 people and depart from the tourist office at 9:30am (although they ask that you arrive 15 min. earlier). Call tel. 0461-216-000 to reserve a space.
