This beautiful boutique hotel close to the church of Santa María Mayor was the birthplace of Francisco de Orellana, the first European to sail the length of the Amazon River. The stone-built mansion dates from the 15th century and exudes atmosphere as soon as you enter its arched doorway topped with the Orellana family’s distinctive ten-dotted crest. Five guest suites have been sumptuously decorated in rich, patterned fabrics by the designer Duarte Pinto Coelho. They are named after Extremaduran adventurers who took part in Orellana’s expedition.
