Treat yourself to a home-cooked meal in Salt Cay's historic South District, prepared by Pat Simmons, a retired schoolteacher who serves breakfast, lunch, or dinner on the screened porch of her wooden house. You'll need to call ahead to dine, and be sure to ask for directions (taxi service is also available to take you there and back). You enter through a wooden gate and Pat's flower-filled garden. Inside, a tin ceiling is painted green and the windows have wooden shutters open to the salt breezes. The day's entrée might be fried grouper (fish fingers), steamed fish (served with Pat's homemade tomato sauce), cracked conch, or barbecued chicken, and sides include peas and rice, okra and rice, and plantains. Be sure to ask for a taste of Pat's homemade pepper jelly.
