Set in a green park just a 5-minute walk from the center of town, Gothic-Renaissance Stari Grad is Varaždin’s top attraction. Built on the site of an earlier medieval castle, Stari Grad as you see it today dates largely from the 16th century, when the round towers were added to further defend it against the Ottoman Turks. In 1925, the privately owned castle became the Town Museum. Inside, 10 rooms are devoted to a display of period furniture, as well as glassware, ceramics, and clocks, giving you some idea of how the local aristocracy once lived.
