Restaurants in Virginia Beach
My favorite spot for a beachside breakfast is the Belvedere Coffee Shop, an old-fashioned diner at the Belvedere Motel, Oceanfront at 36th Street (tel. 757/425-1397). It's worth waiting a few extra minutes to get the two-person booth with one bench facing the ocean. Prices range from $3 to $10. It's open daily 7am to 2:30pm.
The relatively inexpensive Big Sam's Inlet Cafe & Raw Bar, 300 Winston-Salem Ave. (tel. 757/428-4858), overlooking the WaveRunner docks on Rudee Inlet, is another good early-morning choice with a view. It's open daily from 7am to 2am, making it a good place for a late-night snack, too.
For picnic fare, head to the beach branch of Taste Unlimited, 213 36th St. (tel. 757/243-3011), at Pacific Avenue. This gourmet market has excellent sandwiches and salads to eat in or carry out, and you can order a box lunch to eat at the beach. It's open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 6pm, Sunday from 11am to 5pm.

Chick's Oyster Bar
This locals' favorite overlooking the Lynnhaven River has also been attracting tourists' attention lately. It's clear why: the oysters, crabs, and fish are fresh and local and prepared simply but well. A casual place, it began small and it still looks small …$$Waterfront - Lebanese/Coastal American
Croc’s 19th Street Bistro
For 20 years, Croc's has been throwing a party with creative cocktails and foods featuring all the local, sustainable ingredients it can get—in fact, the Old Beach Farmer's Market is held right here on summer Saturday mornings. The menu includes Lebanese mezze (appetizers) with pita…$$Near the Virginia Beach Convention Center - Local Seafood
Margie and Ray’s
This old crab shack near Sandbridge makes she-crab soup worth traveling for and has been doing so since 1964. With wood paneling, stuffed animal trophies on the wall, and simple tables and booths, it isn't fancy. But it is friendly and fun. They open early here, serving breakfast…$9 miles from Rudee Inlet bridge - Local Seafood
Rockafellers
Sweet crab stuffed into locally caught flounder. Shrimp embedded into soft hush puppies with a pimiento cheese sauce. Oysters that reached maturity on a nearby oyster bar. Yes, Rockafellers is seafood heaven. But it's not just the bivalves and fish that are done right here,…$$Waterfront - Home Cooking/Local Seafood
Tautog's Restaurant at Winston's Cottage
If I stopped by a friend's beach cottage—a friend who could really cook—I'd want it to be like Tautog's. The greeting patrons guest is extremely warm, and the old cedar-shake house couldn't be more comfortable, whether you choose…$Near the Beach - New American/Seafood
Terrapin
Serious, special occasion food in an elegant setting (with touches of leather, wood and candlelight) are the draws here. The menu celebrates all the wonderful Tidewater flavors from oysters and crab to seasonal, mostly organic, produce. Terrapin's sourdough rolls are…$$In Pinewood Square Shopping Center - Local Seafood
The Back Deck
After a day on the water, the Back Deck offers a welcome respite with a local beer, a margarita, or piña colada, and some simple, local seafood and comfort food. The menu has traditional favorites from crab dip and raw or steamed oysters to fish tacos, salads, individual pizzas, and…$$Waterfront
