For a break from sightseeing, it's hard to beat the ancient ambience of tea at Brethren's Kitchen, Lord Leycester Hospital (tel. 01926/491422). This tearoom is part of a 16th-century hospital the earl established in the year 1571. It has cool stone floors and wonderful exposed oak beams. Indian, Chinese, and herbal teas are all available, as well as scones with fresh cream, sponge cake, and fruit cake. It's closed between November and March and on Mondays, but it is open on bank holidays.
