Even when the economy sags and disposable income drops, Disney's theme parks usually find a way to increase revenue. In the company's last financial quarter, despite a sharp collapse in international visitors to the United States, Disney's theme parks still managed to increase revenue by 10%, to $6.4 billion.
Although Disney doesn't release attendance figures, the company has a knack for converting any attendance pattern, even weaker ones, into gold by adjusting how much it charges for the many optional add-ons that guests pay for. Between October 2021 and June 2024, Disney's paid ride reservation system, Lightning Lane, reportedly generated some $724 million in pretax revenue for The Walt Disney Company—and that's just for riding rides, which all guests did without paying extra until just a few years ago.
Your parents' Disney may have been about peerless service and high quality, but contemporary Disney is a cash machine that monetizes nearly every step you take on its property.
Restaurant meals, special events, limited edition souvenirs, Lightning Lane—many of the things that will fill your days at Disney now require reservations or advance planning if you don't want to wait in the longest lines and eat the most basic food on your visit.
That's what makes planning a Disney World trip so complicated for us—and so lucrative for the Mouse.
For many years, our award-winning guidebook to Disney World, Universal, and Orlando has included a Disney Planning Timeline that lets you know when reservations open for the major things to do.
Mark your calendars and make sure your credit card information is preloaded into your Disney account! Here's the advice from our Frommer's guide on when to reserve everything on your Walt Disney World vacation.

How far in advance can you book a Disney World hotel?
Up to a year and a half ahead
Rooms tend to open for booking in late spring for the following year (the date changes each year), so if you book right when Disney releases the next year's calendar, you can book as much as a year and a half ahead.
Ideally, you should have your reservation set at least two months ahead of time, and the reason why is next.

How far ahead can you book a Disney World theme park restaurant?
60 days ahead starting at 6am Eastern time in the U.S. via the Disney World website or app
Reservations open 60 days ahead for sit-down theme park restaurants (such as Be Our Guest in Magic Kingdom), "dinnertainment" meals-with-a-show (like the Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue at Fort Wilderness), restaurants in the resort hotels (including Victoria & Albert's) and lounges (including the new pirates-themed The Beak and Barrel at Magic Kingdom).
You cannot make advance timed reservations for counter-service (which Disney calls "quick service") meals, although on the day of your visit, you can use the app's Mobile Order feature to arrange pickup of a meal at a specific time.
If you have reservations at a Disney resort, you can make restaurant reservations 60 days ahead plus the length of your stay. For example, if your hotel booking is for 4 nights, you can reserve restaurants starting 64 days ahead, giving you a 4-day jump on people who won't be staying at Disney.
Use the website or app to make your bookings because the dining reservations phone number (407/939-3463) tends to take way too long.
The most sought-after bookings include California Grill atop Disney's Contemporary Resort, Space 220 Restaurant and GEO-82 Lounge in EPCOT, Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant at Disney's Hollywood Studios, and brunch at Chef Art Smith’s Homecomin’ in Disney Springs. Don't be surprised if you come up empty for these.
Sometimes, you can forage for last-minute cancellations by checking the Disney World app for cancellations (Disney fines guests who don't show up for their bookings; the deadline to cancel is 2 hours ahead), but don't count on it.
All this folderol is why people who just visit the park for the day tend to stick to counter-service meals, where reservations aren't required.

How far ahead can you book Character Dining at Walt Disney World?
60 days ahead starting at 6am Eastern time in the U.S. via the Disney World website or app
Having a meal attended by some of the costumed Disney characters, which Disney calls Character Dining, is considered one of the must-do activities if you have kids.
Like regular restaurant meals, Character Dining meals book up ahead of time, so starting 60 days out, you should snag your slot.
The toughest Character Dining tables to secure are Cinderella's Royal Table and breakfast at Crystal Palace (both of which are inside the Magic Kingdom) and 1900 Park Fare at Disney's Grand Floridian hotel. It's not uncommon for those to fill up on the very first day they go on sale. If you fail—and many have—try again the day before your visit, because that's when most people tend to cancel.

How far ahead can you book Lightning Lane at Disney World?
3 days ahead for day guests, 7 days for Disney hotel guests
If you don't have a reservation at a Disney-run resort hotel, you can buy your Lightning Lane passes and book your times 3 days ahead.
If you have a reservation at a Disney-run resort hotel for your vacation, your Lightning Lane reservations open 7 days before the first day of your hotel stay (with a maximum of 14 days ahead).
One or two of the most popular rides in each theme park are not accessible by the standard Lightning Lane Multi Pass. If you want Lightning Lane for those top-tier rides, you have to pay extra yet again for a Lightning Lane Single Pass. Those slots open at 7am as well.
To learn how Lightning Lane works and the best ways to game the system, read our how-to guide.
How far ahead can you book a Virtual Queue at Walt Disney World?
7am on the same day
The hottest, newest rides may require timed reservations using a lottery system. If a ride is using Virtual Queue, there is a 7am drawing to distribute appointment slots, and you can participate in that on your phone from anywhere. There will be a second drawing at 1pm that you must be inside the park for.
Disney has been known to use the Virtual Queue system to regulate drops of highly anticipated limited edition souvenirs, too.
That's a lot of bureaucracy to tackle every day at 7am! Hope you didn't need to drive to the parks at that hour.

How far ahead should you book a backstage tour at Walt Disney World?
60 days
Unknown to many, the resort offers a healthy selection of special backstage tours that show visitors how the park works (like Animal Kingdom's Wild Africa Trek). You could go into the "Utilidor" tunnels beneath Magic Kingdom, swim in EPCOT's The Living Seas tank, or ride a Segway around Fort Wilderness' trails. But group sizes are small, so you have to get in while the getting's good, and that means advance planning.
VIP tours are a luxury-priced product and so they are unlikely to sell out no matter when you book.
Go to www.disneyworld.com/tours, the Disney World app, or if you have all the time in the world, call 407/939-8687.

How far ahead can you book seasonal ticketed events at Disney World?
3 or 4 months ahead
Over the last half of every year, the Magic Kingdom capitalizes on the holiday season by mounting separately ticketed theme nights that have included Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party and Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party. These distinct events have their own parades, fireworks shows, and amenities. If you haven't paid for that extra ticket, you'll be kicked out of the park around dinnertime before the festivities begin.
Each year, many of the dates hit capacity months ahead of time, but tickets are not released at the same moment each year. The Halloween party starts in August, but tickets usually go on sale in late spring, and while the Christmas party kicks off in November, tickets often go on sale in July, so many nights will already be sold out by the time summer ends.
So try to book at least 3 or 4 months early to increase your chances. The same goes for Epcot's Candlelight Processional, a resort tradition dating to the early 1970s, which books a parade of celebrity guests to read the Christmas story.

How far ahead can you book fireworks dessert parties and dinner packages?
60 days
The resort is always trying to find new ways to upsell visitors—special dessert parties during fireworks, preferred seating at shows with dinner packages, and so on. Offerings may only pop up briefly and then go away, which keeps fans on their toes and also results in frequent sellouts.
Keep tabs on what's coming (warning: not all of it is worth the price, particularly the dessert parties) at www.disneyworld.com/events-tours and act fast if you see something you like, because you can bet passionate Mouseheads will bite first.

How far ahead should you book photo packages at Disney World?
3 days
The package that grants you unlimited downloads of the pictures taken of you by park photographers is called Memory Maker, and it's about 20% cheaper if you buy it at least 3 days ahead of your visit. That can be done online at disneyworld.disney.go.com/memory-maker.

How far ahead should you book Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique at Magic Kingdom?
60 days
If your kids want to get makeovers as princesses, princes, or pirates, they'll want to go to the special kids' salon behind park gates at the Magic Kingdom. The number for reservations is 407/939-7895, but it's faster to book on the website or the Disney World app.

How far ahead should you book the Harmony Barber Shop in Magic Kingdom?
60 days
Similarly, the Harmony Barber Shop on Town Square, near the front gates of the Magic Kingdom, has been giving toddlers their first haircuts since 1971. Staff members are experts—you'll get a baby mouse-ears cap reading “My First Haircut,” a certificate, and wrappings of your child’s first trimmings for posterity. Grown-ups can get trims and shaves, too, and older kids can get sparkly gel combed into their hair. The salon accepts walk-ins, but don't count on there being space, because up to 700 guests a week use these services.
Book ahead using the Disney World app. Search for Harmony Barber Shop.

How far ahead can you book Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge experiences?
60 days, but a few walk-up slots are available
Using the Disney World app 60 days out, secure your place for bizarre alien cocktails at Oga's Cantina, for a spot at a guided session of light saber fabrication at Savi's Workshop (full payment of $250 required in advance), and for Droid Depot if you want to build your own radio-controlled robotic toy.
If you miss out on reserving any of those experiences, you'll have to attempt to join the walk-up list (it's said that asking 2 hours ahead is the best method), but you'll have to try that in person at the park. Of the three activities, Droid Depot is the easiest to get into without a prior booking.
