Those of you reading this on your phones while stuck in a seemingly endless TSA line will probably not be surprised to learn that the U.S. didn't do so hot on the latest ranking of the world's best airports.
This week the aviation rating organization Skytrax handed out its World Airport Awards—often described as the industry's version of the Oscars.
Based on data from what Skytrax calls the "largest annual global airport customer satisfaction survey," the group's independent researchers named 2026's top 20 airports around the world.
Not a single one of those facilities is located in the United States.
As a matter of fact, only one airport in North America cracked the top 20, and it's in Canada. Vancouver International Airport came in 10th place, with Skytrax praising the British Columbia hub for its friendly and helpful staff and impressive installations celebrating local Indigenous culture.
As for accolades earned by U.S. airports, the Houston Airport System, which operates George Bush Intercontinental Airport and William P. Hobby Airport, was determined to have the world's best airport art collection.
And . . . that's about all the survey's pool of travelers representing more than 100 nationalities could find to like about airports in the land where aviation was born.
In a news release, Skytrax explains that the wide-ranging survey evaluates the "customer experience across airport service and product key performance indicators—from check-in, arrivals, transfers, shopping, security/immigration through to departure at the gate."
Well, sure, we're gonna lag if you judge us by that stuff. Doesn't anybody care that we don't make you take your shoes off at security anymore?
It's worth noting that the Skytrax survey was conducted from August 2025 to February 2026, a period that coincides with only a portion of the ongoing partial government shutdown that has resulted in those long security wait times currently plaguing some U.S. airports.
Course, the survey period does encompass all of the previous government shutdown—the longest ever—which lasted 43 days in October and November 2025, and also led to some chaos in air travel.
Perhaps having a commercial aviation system in a near-constant state of meltdown hurt the country's chances in the standings.
One region dominated the best airports list
Asia, meanwhile, dominated the Skytrax rankings, with Singapore Changi Airport—the Meryl Streep of the airport Oscars—winning the top spot for the 14th time.
The futuristic Southeast Asian facility, known for its luxe amenities and spectacular features like the indoor waterfall pictured at the top of this page, was also recognized by Skytrax for having the world's best airport dining and the best airport immigration service, among other accomplishments.
Asian airports claimed spots two through five on the ranking as well. Seoul's Incheon International Airport came in second, followed by Tokyo Haneda International Airport (named the world's cleanest airport), Hong Kong International Airport (best bathrooms), and another Tokyo-area site, Narita International Airport, rounding out the top 5.
Europe's highest-ranking airport, Paris Charles de Gaulle, came in sixth place. A handful of Middle Eastern airports also fared well, though the war in Iran has obviously made those destinations unfeasible for leisure travel for the time being.
