VIDEO: The Natural Beauty of Northern Michigan

Pauline Frommer celebrates the natural beauty of Northern Michigan, land of cherry trees, towering sand dunes, and Great Lakes.
Are you suffering from “nature-deficit disorder”? That’s the term coined by author Richard Louv of the Children & Nature Network, an organization whose website points to dozens of studies extolling the benefits of connecting with the outdoors—advantages that can enrich the lives of youngsters as well as grownups.

Our prescription: A quick jaunt to Northern Michigan, where dips in the Great Lakes, challenging climbs up the towering mountains of sand at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (pictured above), and hikes through deep pine forest will boost both your adrenaline and your mood.

And that’s just the beginning of the natural beauty on display in this pocket of the Midwest. You can pick your own cherries from fragrant trees, wander past the fields of hops that have helped make Traverse City a center of artisanal brewing, and visit a relaxing vineyard where the fruit of the vine is transformed into world-class wines.

In the video below, Pauline Frommer illustrates how natural beauty is a potent lure in Northern Michigan. Let yourself be caught.
