Smart Deal of the Week: Trinidad & Tobago from $100 Per Night

Three properties that offer great discounts to entice travelers tired of the weather that besieges the northern U.S. in wintertime.

While the name indicates the dual nature of its two islands, Trinidad & Tobago (tel. 868/675-7034; www.visittnt.com) is one republic that's actually comprised of two main islands and 21 smaller ones. Many travelers from the United States overlook this southeastern Caribbean country, known among other things for its well-regarded jazz festivals, Carnival, and as the birthplace of the steel drum, limbo, soca, and calypso. In fact, the singer The Mighty Sparrow is nothing short of a national treasure; he's been named Calypso Monarch eight times. Trinidad, more populous and located just southwest of the smaller Tobago, contains the oldest protected rain forest in the western hemisphere and miles of coral reefs. For this week's smart deal, we're focusing on three properties that are currently offering some great discounts to entice travelers who are tired of the cold and the wet and the white that besieges the northern U.S. in wintertime.

Half Moon Blue Hotel (tel. 868/639-3551; www.halfmoonblue.com) in Bacolet Bay, Tobago is offering a 40 percent discount off its rack rates to its guests, starting at $140 per night. Property amenities include penthouse loft, spacious suites, and panoramic views of the Caribbean. Massage, diving, swimming, tennis and golf are all possible onsite or nearby activities; car rentals are offered through the hotel at $60 per day. Rates include welcome drinks, Caribbean breakfast (that means coffee/tee, toast and jam, eggs, ham, or flying fish, fruit and juice), all taxes and service charges. Rooms have king-sized beds, cable television, refrigerator, ceiling fans and air conditioning.

Elsewhere, on Trinidad, Le Grande Almandier (tel. 868/670-1013; www.legrandealmandier.com), located in the fishing village of Grand Riviere, offers guests a respite on the northeast coast. The ten-room inn is offering a weekend package for two for $500, which includes accommodations and all of your meals. The special price is valid for travel December 12 through September 1, 2008, with no blackout dates. Planning a honeymoon? Consider its honeymoon package, offered year round, which starts at $583 for a three-night stay for two people, all meals, a complimentary glass of wine and the use of all non-motorized sporting equipment. As a guest, you are within close proximity to fishing adventures and hiking trails, and if you visit from March to August, you may see the leatherback turtles come ashore and lay their eggs. All rooms have ensuite bathrooms and air conditioning.

Finally, Le Petit Careme (tel. 868/632-4608; www.petitcareme.com), in Mount Irvine, Tobago, offers special rates on its superior villa and/or apartment accommodations that are the equivalent of off-season rates: they start at $290 per night for the villa and a mere $100 per night for the apartment. It is valid for a limited time only, however: January 6-31, subject to availability. The villa can accommodate up to six people comfortably. The property is located in a two-acre valley and bamboo and Samaan trees surround it, with golf and beaches nearby, as well as a children's pool and a main pool.
