Airfare Deals and News for the Week of February 5, 2010

United and American airlines make Hawaii cheaper to get to, Cathay's February deal brings Asian destinations within reach, and more domestic and international deals in this week's roundup.

Last Minute February Fares to Hawaii

Are you a believer in Punxatawney Phil? If so, then you know he emerged from his little burrow last Tuesday, Groundhog's Day, to see his own shadow. And that supposedly means we're in for another six more weeks of winter. However, if you prefer the forecast of the lesser known Staten Island Chuck, who did not see his shadow this year, then you're looking forward to an early spring. Regardless of all this, we are cold, and we are cold now. Spring can't come early enough. Feel the same? Hide out the remainder of the season in Hawaii.

Though not as low as fares to Hawaii last year, both United (tel. 800/241-6522; www.united.com) and American Airlines (tel. 800/433-7300; www.aa.com) are offering some reasonable late winter, last-minute fares here, and here for travel in February through mid March, valid Monday through Thursday. Avoid Valentine's Day blackout dates, when sale fares are not available.

Fares require a 7-day advance purchase, and tickets must be booked by February 8. Fares include:

Horizon Air Sale

Have some west coast gallivantin' to do this spring? Horizon Air (tel. 800/426-0333; www.alaskaair.com) is having a sale on travel around the Northwest and California, from February 17 through June 10, with fares starting at $98 round-trip. Tickets require a 14-day advance purchase, and must be paid for within 24 hours of making your reservation.

Stay clear of blackout dates for Medford, Eugene, and Redmond, for outbound travel between March 18 and March 21, and inbound between March 26 and March 29.

Fares must be purchased by February 17, and include:

Ski Destinations on Sale from United

United's (tel. 800/241-6522; www.united.com) latest ski sale is valid for travel through March 31, for outbound travel Sunday through Wednesday, and inbound travel Tuesday through Friday. Fares require a two-night stay or a Saturday night minimum stay, and allow a max stay of 30 days.

All purchases must be made by February 8. Fares include:

Cathay Pacific Deal of the Month

Cathay Pacific's (tel. 800/233-2742; www.cathaypacific.com) current Deal of the Month for February is good for travel from Los Angeles, San Fran, and New York to a slew of cities in Asia, including Hong Kong, Taipei, Beijing, Shanghai, Manila, Cebu, Bangkok, Phuket, Singapore, Bali, Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai from $779 round-trip.

This deal is valid for departures from March 1 through April 30, and allows for a free stopover in Hong Kong in each direction. No minimum stay is required, and a maximum stay of 30 days is allowed.

Fares include:

More Airlines Make Large Passengers Buy Two Seats

You're paying to check your belongings, so why should other people's excess baggage get a free ride?

That's the question being asked by a growing number of travelers. As airlines look for new ways to boost revenue, fees for checked bags are on the rise; so is scrutiny of overweight customers whose baggage is built in. It's a touchy subject, and one that the airlines are finding harder and harder to avoid. David Landsel takes a look at some of these recent passenger-of-size policies over in the Airfarewatchdog blog.
