"The Boat" is one of Portoferraio's best restaurants. It sees its fair share of tourism but remains a place locals return to for well-prepared fish dishes and a friendly atmosphere. You can dine alfresco under an awning on the quiet street out front or inside surrounded by island art and with a fresh tulip on your table. The gnocchi all'Elbana is a good preparation of the potato dumpling pasta with a mix of tomato sauce and pesto, while the spaghetti alla bottarga is more traditional -- thin spaghetti in butter with dried tuna eggs grated over it. For a secondo, try the catch of the day baked in the oven (the spigola, or sea bass, is good) or the stoccafisso con patate (dried cod cooked with potatoes, onions, and parsley).
