An hour's drive north of Barcelona and a 15-minute drive from the beaches of Costa Brava, this member of Relais & Châteaux was elegantly created from a 1751 farmstead (masía). In the hamlet of Torrent, Mas de Torrent is one of the most artful and best hotels in Spain. Try for one of the 10 rooms in the original farmhouse, with its massive beams and spacious bathrooms with deep tubs and power showers. The rooms in the newer, bungalow-style annex are just as comfortable but lack the mellow old atmosphere. If you can afford it, the suites are the way to go here; each has a private terrace with an individual pool heated with solar panels. From the rooms' stone balconies, visitors can enjoy vistas of the countryside, with Catalonian vineyards in the distance. In 2007 the hotel opened one of the finest spas and gyms in northeast Spain, which set a policy of being environmentally friendly in the use of its natural products. The staff can arrange from some of the best massages from around the world, borrowing techniques from such countries as China, Japan, Thailand, and even Tibet. On another level is a state-of-the-art fitness center, and on a third level is a heated pool and sun terrace with panoramic views of the countryside.
