If for no other reason, we'd recommend this hotel for its tranquil setting; it's tucked away in a large park. Fortunately, it's also an old-fashioned place full of charm and character. The richly detailed Italianate building was constructed in 1875 as a headquarters for the local branch of the Freemasons. Today, after extensive renovations, the two lowest floors of the three-story building are devoted to a comfortable, cozy hotel; the stately top floor is still the domain of the Freemasons, one of Kalmar's most active social and charitable organizations. Bedrooms are well maintained and, in most cases, have high ceilings and appealingly formal furnishings, including well-maintained private bathrooms. There's a copious breakfast buffet included in the room price.
