Frommer's Review
Sometimes you have to leave the touristic center to find a restaurante tipico of Lisbon -- a place that's so evocative of yesterday. At this bustling spot, where diners eat at communal tables in a jampacked room, expect banners of local soccer teams, a blaring TV in one corner, and lots of local families. Avoid Sunday lunch when the place overflows its capacity. Homemade dishes full of robust flavor and served in generous portions keep this place humming with demanding locals. The cookery reflects some of the best dishes of the Portuguese kitchen, including daily specials. Fish, meat, and poultry dishes are equally showcased here. One specialty, among others, is the classic feijoada (pork with beans). Begin with the caldo verde, Portugal's most famous soup, with plenty of sausage, potatoes, and cabbage. We enjoy the tiny plump cuttlefish, served with the fiery hot peppers of Angola. On most days, a platter of juicy roast suckling pig might appear. For dessert, finish off with some 30 homemade concoctions. In lieu of public transportation, a taxi from the center is the best way to get here.
