Frommer's Review

Established in 1768, this organization counted Sir Joshua Reynolds, Thomas Gainsborough, and Benjamin West among its founding members. Since its beginning, each member has had to donate a work of art, and so, over the years, the academy has built up a sizable collection. The outstanding treasure is Michelangelo's beautiful relief of Madonna and Child. The annual Summer Exhibition has been held for more than 200 years; see the "London Calendar of Events" in chapter 3 for details. The main focus of the gallery, however, is on temporary exhibitions which are not related to the Royal Academicians.
