Villandry Review

Delicatessen, food hall, bakery, and restaurant, Villandry offers a lot within a relatively small building. It's an industrial minimalist space with a tempting food market area full of meats, cheeses, jams, chutneys, and more. The restaurant at the back can get noisy and overcrowded -- and is not the place for a romantic evening meal -- but Villandry is very popular during the day, drawing famous faces, producers from the nearby BBC, and locals. The menu walks a nicely balanced line between the traditional and the contemporary. Around nine starters, mains including leek and watercress risotto and steaks, plus a daily changing special (lamb cutlets on Tuesday; salmon fish pie on Friday) all please. We prefer the more casual charcuterie area; the relaxed bar opens onto tables for summer dining, and Sunday brunch is good fun.

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
