Frommer's Review
This cozy restaurant is a celebrity favorite, attracting the likes of Madonna and Hugh Hefner. Archipelago is definitely on the see-and-be-seen circuit. Media darling Michael Von Hruschka has decorated the restaurant in a whimsical style, with everything from birdcages to a Buddha serving as props. There are precious touches, such as the drink list written on delicate paper and inserted in an ostrich eggshell. Everything is presented in exquisite boxes, and even the bill comes in a "book." Amazingly, with all the attention paid to the environment, the cuisine does not suffer in ingredients or preparation. Begin with a coconut-and-lemon-grass soup or the most delectable small-carrot spring rolls. Vegetable couscous and fish-and-banana risotto are delectable, and tiramisu is given an original touch with the addition of ginger wine. Crocodile, peacock, and kangaroo appear on the menu along with chicken, fish, lamb, and even vegetarian options.
