Upper Berkeley is a classic street of B&Bs; in days of yore, it was home to Elizabeth Montagu (1720-1800), "queen of the bluestockings," who defended Shakespeare against attacks by Voltaire. Today, it's a good, safe, respectable retreat at an affordable price. This unfrilly hotel offers accommodations in a centrally located Victorian-era building within walking distance of Oxford Street shopping and Hyde Park. The small, basic rooms have been refurbished and redecorated with a no-nonsense decor and have well-kept bathrooms with private showers.
