Frommer's Review
This deluxe hostelry has captured the imagination of glamour-mongers the world over ever since it was inaugurated by Princess Alexandra in 1970. Its clientele includes heads of state, superstars, and top business execs. Sitting tastefully behind a modern facade in one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in the world, it's located opposite its major competitors, the London Hilton and the Inter-Continental, but has better food, better rooms, and more style and refinement than either of its rivals. Even so, it falls just a little bit short of the platinum credentials of The Dorchester and The Connaught , both longer established. Inside, acres of superbly crafted paneling and opulent but conservative decor create the impression that the hotel is far older than it is.
The guest rooms are large and beautifully outfitted with well-chosen chintz, reproductions, plush upholstery, and dozens of well-concealed electronic extras. Most rooms are medium size, although some are quite large, and all are maintained in perfect condition. There is plenty of desk space, and in many instances tall windows open onto stand-up balconies. Mattresses are of the finest quality, as are bed linens. Bathrooms are ample, with thoughtful extras such as deep tubs, robes, and deluxe toiletries.
