Planning a Trip

Getting There -- The nearest rail station is in St-Raphaël, a neighboring resort. At St-Raphaël's Vieux Port, boats leave the Gare Maritime de St-Raphaël, rue Pierre-Auble (tel. 04-94-95-17-46), for St-Tropez (trip time: 50 min.) four or five times a day from April to October. The one-way fare is 11€ ($14). Year-round, 10 to 15 Sodetrav buses per day leave from the Gare Routière in St-Raphaël (tel. 04-94-97-88-51) for St-Tropez. The trip takes 1 1/2 to 2 1/4 hours, depending on the bus and the traffic, which during midsummer is usually horrendous. A one-way ticket costs 9.20€ ($12). Buses run directly to St-Tropez from Toulon and Hyères and from the nearest airport, at Toulon-Hyères, 56km (35 miles) away.

If you drive, note that parking in St-Tropez is very difficult, especially in summer. You can park in the Parking des Lices (tel. 04-94-97-34-46), beneath place des Lices; enter on avenue Paul-Roussel. Designed for 300 cars, this lot is free for the first hour, but costs 1€ ($1.30) for every additional hour. A 24-hour sojourn costs 34€ ($44) in summer; winter visitors enjoy a slight reduction -- to 23€ ($30). Many visitors with expensive cars prefer this lot, because it's more secure than any other. Charging the same rates, a new garage, Parking du Nouveau Port, avenue Charles de Gaulle (tel. 04-94-97-40-31), stands at the waterfront. Every municipal engineer in St-Tropez has worked hard to funnel incoming traffic toward either of these two underground garages. A car can't enter the resort without seeing prominent signs funneling traffic to either location. To get here from Cannes, drive southwest along the coastal highway (RD98), turning east when you see signs pointing to St-Tropez.

Visitor Information -- The Office de Tourisme is on quai Jean-Jaurès (tel. 04-94-97-45-21; fax 04-94-97-82-66; www.ot-saint-tropez.com).
