Corridas (bullfights) are staged for a week during the fallas observances in the summer. Today locals seem more interested in soccer than in bullfighting. Nevertheless, Valencia's Plaza de Toros, one of the largest rings in Spain, is adjacent to the rail station at Calle de Xátiva 28 (tel. 96-351-93-15).
As a respite from the heat, retreat to the Jardí Botànic, Calle Quart 80 (tel. 96-315-68-00), which was founded by the University of Valencia in 1567. For 2 centuries it was an orchard for medicinal plants, and botany classes are still offered. Today it boasts one of the most important collections of varied tree life and palms in Europe. In all, nearly 45,000 international species are displayed. Admission is .60€ (85¢) but free for children 6 and under. Hours are daily May to August 10am to 9pm, April and September 10am to 8pm, March and October 10am to 7pm, and November to February 10am to 6pm (Metro: Turia and Angel Guimerà).
