Frommer's Review
Virginia Beach's best-equipped resort actually consists of two hotels -- the original Cavalier on the Hill, built in 1927 across Atlantic Avenue from the beach, and the Cavalier on the Ocean, which has been kept up-to-date since it opened in 1973. Although it's not directly on the beach, and it's open only during the summer and is mainly used for overflow guests, the original building has all the charm. Its enclosed veranda with white-wicker furnishings, potted plants, and great ocean views evoke images of the days when F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald danced here and lunches were black tie. Some of its guest rooms have Williamsburg-quality Chippendale reproductions, Colonial-print fabrics, gilt-framed artwork, and museum-quality decorative objects. Some feature European-style bathrooms with black-and-white tile, pedestal sinks, whirlpools, lighted makeup mirrors, and bidets. The heated indoor Olympic-size pool is magnificently tiled and illuminated by a skylight. Open all year, the newer beachside building has nicely decorated contemporary-style rooms, all with oceanfront balconies. A shuttle connects the two wings when both are open. The boardwalk stops just short of the Cavalier, so unlike all other hotels here, its lawn fronts directly on the beach.
