The Legend of the White Horse
The Baengma (White Horse) River runs past Buyeo, and in A.D. 660 the Shilla and Tang troops had to cross it in order to make their final assault on the Baekje stronghold at Busosan. Legend has it that every time the Tang general, Su Dingfang, attempted to cross the river, a thick fog would form. The general was convinced that King Mu, the Baekje leader, had transformed himself into a dragon so that he could protect his people. So General Su cut off the head of a white horse and, using it as bait, went fishing for the dragon. It worked -- he caught the dragon and was able to invade, and defeat, the Baekje Kingdom.
