L'abri Cafe
★★★ SEAFOOD—French for “the shelter”, L’abri’s name pays homage to the howling 150km/hour winds unique to the Cape Breton Highlands, and the resiliency of the Acadian people who have had to live with and endure them. This tastefully decorated new restaurant, with waterfront views, has provided a neededindeed provided a welcome shelter, and serves the best food you’ll find boost to the food scene in town. Seafood is the focus, with the expected fish and chips, chowder, and mussels on offer, but they also knock out tasty roasted brussels sprouts and kale and beet salads too. For a stick-to-your-ribs starter try the classic Acadian fricot, a cross between stew and soup with chicken and potatoes cooked in a slightly thickened broth or dive into the vegetarian curry a la Canadienne sweetened with Nova Scotia maple syrup. The restaurant has a nice selection of local beers, including Cape Breton’s own Big Spruce and Breton, as well as Nova Scotia wines. Word on the street is the owners have their eye on another spot in town too. Let’s hope it comes to pass.
